thinking together about how we read + interpret the bible

Most Christians know that reading the Bible is core to the Christian life. But how do we learn to read and interpret the Bible well? For instance, how do we know or decide that one text (about food laws or head-coverings, for example) is not applicable today, whereas other teachings are applicable for all people in all times? In truth, we have often not thought much about how we read and interpret the Bible.

Clearly, this question relates significantly to our congregational conversation about women and authority in the church, but it’s about more than that – because this relates to how we read and interpret everything in the Bible.

With the desire to foster good learning and conversation, Scott Anderson (Lambrick’s lead pastor) will be offering two 7-part discussion groups over Zoom. Both of these groups will start the first week of February (Feb 2 & 3rd) and will meet every other week (roughly) through till April.

These groups are intended for those who find themselves grappling with these questions, and who would appreciate some honest and thoughtful conversation on the matter. They are not intended as debate forums, but learning communities. Scot McKnight’s book, The Blue Parakeet (second edition), will be the text for the group. Everyone in the group will need a copy of the book and read the assigned portions in anticipation of each session – discussions will flow out of the reading.
