Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, alongside celebrating our Indigenous Peoples, let's be reminded of God's call for us to seek justice and correct oppression - part of that is to remember the painful history of Canada, including the direct role the Church played.

Below we have highlighted some resources from our Every Child Matters page that are particularly helpful and appropriate.

Doctrine of Discovery - from the Anglican Church of Canada. A 1 hr documentary, highlighting the foundational role the Church played in the dehumanisation and oppression of Indigenous Peoples.

Clearing the Plains - by Dr James Daschuk - a 1hr 40 min talk exploring the wider historical subjugation of Indigenous Peoples, beyond residential schools, and the impact that is felt today.

* Velma's Story (54 minutes) and Peggy's Story (20 minutes) - from Legacy of Hope.ca - Stories from survivors of Residential Schools that were here, on Vancouver Island.

* TW - These videos contain subject matter that may be disturbing to some visitors, particularly Survivors of the Residential School System. Please call the Health Canada 24-Hour National Survivors Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419 if you need assistance.
For those wishing to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with young children, we loved this activity guide, created by the Government of Canada.
